Bangladesh declared independence from Pakistan on March 26, 1971, starting a military conflict, known as the Bangladesh Liberation War. One of the most important battles of the war took place on November 21, 1971, when the united forces of the Bangladesh army launched a coordinated offensive against the Pakistani Army. This offensive led to liberation of large areas along the border of Bangladesh and eventual end of the war on December 16, 1971.
Celebration of Armed Forces Day in Bangladesh includes different events. President, Prime Minister and Service Chiefs begin the ceremony of wreath laying at Eternal Flame at Dhaka Cantonment. Prime Minister, leader of the opposition and other civil and military officials hold special receptions in the afternoon. The TV channels broadcast a special program Anirban. Families of the soldiers are invited to the military stations, where they are served special meals.
