Day of Baku Metro Employees in Azerbaijan Day of Baku Metro Employees is celebrated in Azerbaijan on November 8. It was established by President Ilham Aliyev in 2006 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the opening of Baku Metro.

Baku Metro is a rapid transit system serving the capital of Azerbaijan. The decree authorizing the construction of a metro system in Baku was issued in 1947. The construction began in 1951 and lasted more than 15 years. Baku Metro was officially opened on November 6, 1967 and launched two days later. It opening was dated for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution.

Baku Metro became the fifth underground railway system in the Soviet Union after Moscow Metro, Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) Metro, Kiev Metro, and Tbilisi Metro. It is the only metro in Azerbaijan. Currently, it has two lines and 23 stations, total system length is 34.6 km. As of 2013, Baku Metro carries about 566,000 passengers per day.

Day of Baku Metro Employees was inaugurated to recognize the contribution of the staff of Baku Metro. On the occasion of their professional holiday, many employees are awarded special prizes for their hard work and dedication.
