Mother's Day in Malawi Date in the current year: October 15, 2024
Mother's Day was established in Malawi by late President Hastings Banda. It was celebrated on Monday of the second week in October, however, the date was changed by President Bingu wa Mutharika to coincide with International Day of Rural Women, established by the UN General Assembly in 2008.
Mother's day is a public holiday in Malawi. Annually President of Malawi delivers a solemn speech dedicated to mothers and motherhood, highlighting importance of mothers for the nation. Also celebration of Mother's Day is a good opportunity to remember the problems that women face every day, including women's rights, violence in a family and victimization by men.
Traditionally various events are organized at schools. Children participate in festive ceremonies and learn respect and love towards mother.
