Children's Day in Costa Rica Costa Rica celebrates Children's Day (Día del Niño) on September 9. It was established in 1946 to recognize and guarantee the rights of children and to celebrate childhood.

Children's Day in Costa Rica is not a legal holiday. Nevertheless, it is widely celebrated across the country with various events and activities. Some events are purely recreational, but many of them aim at highlighting the need for protection of children's rights and the improvement in quality of primary and secondary education.

When Children's Day falls on a school day, which happens more often than not, schools organize special celebratory activities for their students. Students do not have usual classes on this day, instead they are given the opportunity to enjoy theater games, sporting competitions, relay races, face painting, cooking lessons and other fun activities.

In case Children's Day falls on a weekend, most Costa Rican parents try to spend as much time with their children as possible. They buy their kids small gifts and treats, take them to amusement parks or movies, organize picnics, parties or family dinners etc.
