Independence Day in Indonesia Date in the current year: August 17, 2024
The first Europeans appeared in Indonesia in the 16th century, when the Portuguese traders sought the way of monopolization of the sources of nutmeg, cloves and cubeb pepper. The Dutch and British traders followed them, but only the Dutch could become a dominant European power and established the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia. When the company dissolved in 1800, the Netherlands established the Dutch East Indies as a nationalized colony.
Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands only after the end of World War II. During the war Indonesia was occupied by Japan, that intensified the present struggle for independence. After surrender of Japan in the War, Sukarno, an influential leader of the country, proclaimed independence of Indonesia, that occurred on August 17, 1945. The Netherlands didn't recognize it till 1949.
