Teachers' Day in Peru Date in the current year: July 6, 2024
Celebration of Teachers' Day in Peru is connected with one historic event. During the Peruvian War of Independence, that lasted from 1811 to 1821, José de San Martín became a prominent leader of the Peruvian people. After the war he was appointed Protector of Peru and administered the country from 1821 till his death in 1850. San Martín is known for many contributions to establishment of independent Peru and its development. One of his earliest achievements was foundation of the first normal school for men. The resolution for establishment of the school was passed by another great Peruvian politician, Marquis of Torre-Tagle (who later became President of Peru) on July 6, 1822.
President of Peru Manuel A. Odría decided to commemorate the day of establishment of the first school, that is why he designated Teachers' Day to be on July 6. This holiday was established in 1953, since then it's celebrated annually.
