Doctor's Day in India Contribution of physicians to the well-being of the Indian nation is annually recognized on July 1, when the country celebrates Doctor's Day. This holiday is observed on the birthday of the legendary Indian physician and second Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882. He gained B.A. from Patna College with Honors in Mathematics and applied for Bengal Engineering College and the Calcutta Medical College. He was accepted to both institutions, but he chose career of doctor.

As a doctor, B.C. Roy exhibited immense dedication to his work. He practiced privately in his free time, making his service available for poor people, and was even prepared to serve as a nurse if necessary. He died at the age of 80 exactly on his birthday, July 1, in 1962.

There are several ways of observation of Doctor's Day in India. Patients greet physicians with cards and flowers. The hospitals arrange commemorative dinners and other organizations felicitate medical fraternity.
