National Day in Serbia Date in the current year: February 15, 2024

National Day in Serbia February 15 is National Day in Serbia. This public holiday commemorates the First Serbian Uprising in 1804 and adoption of the first Serbian Constitution in 1835.

The First Serbian Uprising began in 1804, when Serbia tried to gain independence from the Ottoman rule that lasted for more than three centuries. The uprising lasted nine years and nine months and ended in 1813. Unfortunately, the uprising was unsuccessful for Serbia, but it paved the way for the Second Serbian Uprising two years later, that succeeded in securing Serbian autonomy.

Another major event in the history of Serbia was adoption of the constitution in 1835. This document is known as Candlemas constitution, because it was adopted on the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The document was adopted under the rule of Prince Miloš Obrenović I and it was the first constitution of Serbia. The constitution was canceled a month later, but its adoption is a very important event in the history of Serbia.
