Border Guard Day in Turkmenistan Date in the current year: August 11, 2024

Border Guard Day in Turkmenistan In many former Soviet republics, Border Guard Day is celebrated on May 28. However, in Turkmenistan this date was changed to August 11 in order to celebrate the establishment of the country's Border Service in 1992.

After the collapse of the USSR, newly independent republics had to establish their own border guard. Border Troops of Turkmenistan were officially established on August 11, 1992, by the first President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov. Five years later, they were transformed into the State Border Service of Turkmenistan. It is part of the country's Armed Forces.

Turkmenistan is bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. The main tasks of the Turkmen Border Service include the protection of the state border, fight against international terrorism, fight against illegal migration and human trafficking, prevention of smuggling and drug trafficking, protection of oil and gas platforms and pipelines in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea etc.

Border Guard Day was established by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in 2009. On August 11, Turkmen border guards are congratulated on their professional holiday by government officials and military command.
