Science Day is an official professional holiday in Turkmenistan celebrated on June 12 each year. It was officially established in 2008 to commemorate the laws that marked the beginning of the reform of the scientific sphere in Turkmenistan.On June 12, 2007, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow signed the laws “On Improving the Scientific System of Turkmenistan” and “On the Activities of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan”. These laws launched the reformation of the country's scientific system. A year later, June 12 was officially proclaimed as Science Day.
Science Day in Turkmenistan is typically celebrated with scientific conferences, seminars, symposiums, science fairs and other appropriate activities and events coordinated by the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
The Academy is the state body that ensures the practical realization of the country's scientific and technical policy. It was founded in 1951 as the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. The Academy was closed under president Saparmurat Niyazov, but his successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow reopened it.
