Financial and Economic Sector Workers Day was first established by the government of the Kyrgyz Republic in 1998. It was originally celebrated on December 10. In 2001, it was moved to the last Sunday in November, and in 2003, the holiday got its current date. This professional day was created to celebrate the contribution of all the employees of the financial and economic sector to the country's socioeconomic development.

The banking system in Kyrgyzstan is dominated by the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (the country's central bank) established in 1991. As of 2015, there also are twenty-five commercial banks operating on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. All banking activities are regulated by the law “On the National Bank” and the law “On Banks and Banking”. Banking operations are subject to licensing. Kyrgyzstan supports Islamic banking as an alternative to the existing traditional principles of finance.
