National Panchayati Raj Day in India National Panchayati Raj Day, also known as National Local Self-Government Day, is a holiday in India celebrated by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on April 24. It was inaugurated by the 14th Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh in 2010.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is responsible for the process of decentralization and local governance in Indian states. Originally, panchayati raj was the traditional system of local government in the Indian subcontinent. The modern panchayati raj was introduced by the 1992 constitutional amendment. It is based on the traditional system and provides for more decentralized administration.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj was created in 2004. It monitors the implementation of Panchayati Raj Act and other laws concerning local-self government. The Ministry is also responsible for founding seminars, workshops, and research studies for the development of the basic units of local administration (gram panchayats).
