The history of creation of the first melioration system in Azerbaijan goes back to ancient times. The first traces of melioration canals date back to the first years of AD, and in the 7th century melioration has already had a large-scale character. The first modern melioration systems appeared in Azerbaijan only at the beginning of the 20th century.

Authorities of Azerbaijan pay much attention to the issues of land reclamation and water resources. The country has a special program designed for development of regions. According to this program, development of melioration receives a significant sum of foreign investments.
