The first Flower Festival was held in 2000 to honor the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. At that time the festival was organized on May 11, on the second day after the birthday of th president. But after his death Flower Festival was rescheduled to May 10 in honor of the former president.
Exhibition of sculptures made of fresh flowers is a traditional event of the festival. The sculptures can be seen in the Heydar Aliyev park, but originally they were placed at the seaside boulevard, a favorite tourist sight.
The scale of the festival impresses. More than million flowers were used in 2012. 116 tons of flowers were imported from Holland, France, Germany and Italy to Baku.
