On September 19, 1944, the first civil aircraft arrived in the city of Chișinău, and the Moldovan Independence Squadron was created. The national airline of Moldova is Air Moldova. It was founded in 1993 on the basis of the local unit of Aeroflot (former Soviet national airline). A year later, Moldavia's first private airline was created. Moldavia Airlines is also headquartered in Chișinău.
